The Indian handicrafts are popular across the globe. India is known for producing some distinguished handicrafts that carry immense aesthetic and functional value. These handicrafts are a symbol of the unparalleled innate designing skills, enormous hard work and love for creativity in the Indian artisans. The handicraft products epitomize the profound and diverse Indian traditions and cultures that have variously evolved over time. For instance the handicrafts items patronized by the Mughal royalty are designs that are influenced by the court paintings and miniature art derived from the Persian or indigenous sources. These designs are visible in the handicraft items such as Indian carpets, brocades, paper mache and stone inlay, etc. The handicraft products also reflect the numerous Indian folklores and to a great extent have grown inter-dependently with them.

Handicrafts are not a new venture in India. Since centuries, Indian artisans have been taking keen interest in giving shape to their beautiful artistic skills. According to researchers, the handicraft culture gained prominence during the time of Harappan Civilization. And it became so popular that it was made to pass from one generation to another. As of now every region, state and even a small village in India has its unique handicraft culture.

India has a rich heritage of diverse handicrafts from north to south, west to east and in every corner of the subcontinent. The north India is known for its unmatched carpets, wood craft, metal work textiles, pottery, copper and brass items, paintings, woolen textiles, embroidery, tie-n-dye handicraft products. The southern India offers exclusive lac work, stone work, terracotta, cane and bamboo, silk, shell crafts and metal work items. The eastern states of the subcontinent have jute, silk, shell craft and wonderful paintings to their name. The western zone specializes in unique jewelry to match a woman’s style and ethnicity. The central Indian zone offers beautiful and durable cane and bamboo handicraft items. Assam and the nearby states i.e. the North East zone have their own distinct paintings, jewelry and textile products.

The enigma of Indian handicrafts is increasing each day. Be it the artifacts, textile crafts, home accessories, paintings or furniture, the Indian handicrafts are coveted items everywhere. The spellbinding variety of vibrant motifs and designs of the products are a great enticement to everyone. The bell craft from Bastar, the magnificent Madhubani and miniature paintings, the mirror worked and tie-n-tyed textile craft from Kutch, the beautiful Phulkari from Punjab are some of the most demanded items irrespective of their cost. Besides these, the handcrafted wood furniture, home accessories, jewelry and stationery are items with great market value.

The Indian handicraft in textile is one of its kinds. No where else in the world will you find such meticulous and dexterous sequins work and embroideries. The Indian handloom cloth has an unmatched elegance, style and comfort. According to some historians, the Romans called the Indian textiles “woven air” because of their fine quality. The Indian cloth is also famous for its “chikan” and “zari” work.

Thus Indian handicraft is a unique blessing to the Indian artisans and a boon to the rest of the world.
